Life After Treatment
Caring for a Loved One
Living with someone who has a serious disease can be difficult at times. People with cancer and those who care about them face many problems and challenges. Coping with these problems is often easier when you have helpful information and support.
As a family member or friend of someone with melanoma, you may find the following information helpful.
- Learn all you can about melanoma and how it is treated.
- If your loved one expresses anger or frustration about the illness, do not take it personally. Simply provide support and allow your loved one to express feelings and concerns.
- Watch for signs of depression. If you think your loved one is depressed, provide emotional support and contact the doctor.
- Understand that your loved one may need help with chores and tasks, such as preparing meals. Be willing to help with or take over some of those responsibilities.
- Realize that side effects of treatment may affect the sense of taste and smell. You may need to try preparing different foods and serving several small meals throughout the day. Be open to making adjustments as needed.
