Melanoma Basics
Moles and Other Lesions

A skin lesion is any type of skin growth, regardless of whether it is benign or malignant. We all have a variety of spots and growths on our skin. We are born with some of them; others we acquire as we grow older. Some skin lesions may resemble melanoma, but are in actuality noncancerous growths. Most skin lesions are harmless and normal, and remain stable throughout our lives. Sometimes, however, new growths may develop or old ones undergo change. These lesions may signal skin cancer or be precursors of skin cancer, including melanoma. By becoming familiar with your own skin lesions, you will be better able to distinguish between normal growths and those requiring evaluation by your doctor.
